A massive Russian strike kills two civilians and injures 15, while Kyiv strikes Moscow airports.

On July 21, explosions illuminated the night sky, and the high-pitched whine of drone engines echoed through Kyiv during an attack that Ukraine’s air force reported as 426 drones and 24 missiles launched, with 23 drones striking targets across the nation. Many residents of Kyiv sought shelter in underground stations during another tense, sleepless night. Explosions were heard throughout the city as air defense units fought to intercept the attack. Moscow has intensified its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities, and analysts say the barrages are likely to escalate as Russian drone production expands.

In eastern Ukraine, Kharkiv Governor Oleh Synehubov reported multiple explosions in the city, Ukraine’s second-largest, but provided no immediate details on the extent of the damage.

Russian media reported that Ukraine also conducted drone attacks, causing chaos at airports serving Moscow, where thousands of passengers waited in lines or slept on the ground after flights were canceled or delayed. Russia’s defense ministry stated it had shot down 117 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 30 over the Moscow region.

President Zelenskyy announced Saturday that his officials have suggested holding a new round of peace talks this week. Russian state media on Sunday reported that no date has been scheduled yet, but Istanbul is expected to remain the likely venue.
