The US is prepared to offer Ukraine security guarantees, but not NATO membership.

The US is willing to provide Ukraine with security assurances after a peace agreement is reached, but NATO membership is not seen as a possible guarantee, French President Emmanuel Macron stated on August 13.

However, in a joint statement issued after the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that Russia should not have veto rights over Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance.

Meanwhile, Starmer noted that European countries have prepared credible military plans for deploying “support forces” in Ukraine after a ceasefire is agreed upon. More than 30 nations are discussing participation in a Ukrainian peacekeeping mission. London’s current proposal envisions a more “realistic mission”, which involves ensuring air security over Western Ukraine, training Ukrainian military personnel, and clearing mines in the Black Sea. As well, Britain has dropped the idea of sending a 30,000-strong peacekeeping force to Ukraine.

However, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that his country is ready to deploy troops in Ukraine when the security situation allows.
