Ukraine intends to expand its presence in the EU biomethane market.

Representatives from Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy and an EU delegation discussed integrating Ukraine’s gas transmission system into the European Database (UDB). This integration will open the EU market to Ukrainian biomethane and enable it to earn green bonuses.

“Our ambitious goal is to ensure the technical connection of the GTS Operator of Ukraine to this system, making it one of the first companies outside the EU to be fully integrated into the UDB,” the Ministry of Energy stated.

Integration into the UDB is a crucial step for the sustainable entry of Ukrainian biomethane into the EU market. The agency is finalizing a package of supporting documents for biomethane export transactions that have already been completed. These materials will form the basis for the final assessment of Ukraine’s readiness to report within the UDB. EU representatives gave their assurance that they are prepared to provide a final evaluation in July. If approved, a green premium would be calculated for Ukrainian biomethane producers, setting a precedent for a non-EU country.
