Analysts compared EU countries’ spending on Russian energy and their support for Ukraine.


Experts examined EU countries’ total expenditures on Russian oil and gas imports, alongside the military, financial, and humanitarian aid provided to Ukraine from 2022 to 2024. Italy (€23.55B), Hungary (€20.53B), and the Netherlands (€20.14B) had the highest spending on Russian energy imports. They have provided Ukraine with €2.26B, €0.05B, and €7.33B in aid, respectively.
Slovakia has spent €12.75B on Russian oil and gas but sent only €0.71B in aid to Ukraine. France’s aid to Ukraine is estimated at €4.89B, while its Russian energy imports amount to €12.16B. Germany has provided Ukraine with €17.26B in aid and spent less on Russian oil imports at €11.66B.
Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Romania, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Portugal all spent more on Russian energy imports than on aid to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Finland, Latvia, Sweden, Estonia, Croatia, Austria, and Denmark paid less for Russian energy than they did on aid for Ukraine.
