The EU is confident that Trump will continue to support Ukraine but is wary of easing sanctions against Russia.

US President-elect Donald Trump has extended the timeline for the implementation of his campaign promise to end the war in Ukraine in a day to several months. According to EU allies, this is a signal that the Trump administration does not plan to stop supporting Kyiv immediately. European officials said there are currently no concrete decisions on ending the war and support for Ukraine will continue after the president’s inauguration on January 20.

“The Trump team is obsessed with the idea of showing strength, so they are now reviewing their approach to Ukraine,” one of the speakers noted.

At the same time, EU officials are wary that Trump will cancel sanctions against Russia introduced by Joe Biden, which could radically change international relations and trade. The European Commission has already begun reviewing Biden’s decrees to understand which canceled ones will most affect the bloc or undermine its measures.

Meanwhile, amid possible policy changes by Trump, NATO has taken control of Poland’s air defenses from the US and responsibility for protecting Poland’s logistical routes through which aid is delivered to Ukraine.
