Ukraine has produced the first million cubic meters of biomethane, and the selection of communities to launch waste-fired CHPs is underway.

The first two biomethane producers in Ukraine pumped their first million cubic meters of biomethane into underground gas storage facilities in the last months of 2024, said the head of the Bioenergy Association, Heorgiy Heletukha.

It is noted that the first biomethane plant of the Vitagro group of companies has been operational in Ukraine since September and the Gals Agro plant since November. Plans for 2025 include the launch of at least five new biomethane plants, through which production can increase to over 100 million cubic meters per year.

Heletukha believes that developing biomethane production can be an essential element of distributed generation in Ukraine.

At the same time, the State Recovery Agency is selecting communities for a project to build combined heat and power plants (CHP) that will run on fuel from solid household or industrial waste. It is assumed that the waste will have been initially processed to remove recyclable material, and what cannot be recycled will be used as fuel for the CHP.
