The US calls the suspension of Russian gas transit through Ukraine one of Moscow’s biggest and most expensive defeats.

Ukraine’s decision to stop transporting Russian gas through its territory was one of Moscow’s largest and costliest defeats, White House adviser John Kirby believes. According to him, Russia could lose about $6.5B annually because of this decision.

Kirby added that the US welcomes “Ukraine’s decision and its determination.” He also said that the US will increase energy supplies to Europe, where 50% of liquefied natural gas imports already come from the US.

After Ukraine suspended gas transit, Austria’s OMV signed an agreement to supply hydrocarbons to Germany’s Uniper Gas from its project in the Romanian portion of the Black Sea. Neptun Deep, whose production is expected to begin in 2027, contains approximately 100 billion cubic meters of gas, making it one of the largest natural gas fields in the EU.

President Zelenskyy noted that Kyiv is ready to supply coal for electricity generation to Moldova to help unrecognized Transnistria, which lost its ability to heat with the cessation of gas supplies from Russia.
