The UK, EU, and US will work to strengthen Ukraine’s position in peace talks with Russia.
The UK is focused on ensuring Ukraine is in the strongest possible position in 2025, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said. To do this, the UK plans to use a range of mechanisms, including economic sanctions and a shadow fleet initiative, to tackle critical sources of revenue that support Russia’s military machine.
Together with her Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Støre, she recognized the importance of strengthening the unwavering Ukrainian support within the Joint Expeditionary Force, a grouping of Ukraine’s largest and most committed allies. They also stressed the importance of working closely with NATO allies on defense and security.
In turn, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that the EU and the US should intensify their efforts to give Ukraine a better negotiating position in future negotiations with Russia, which should be encouraged and forced on the aggressor, not the victim. He also gave his assurance that Russian sanctions will be strengthened during Poland’s presidency of the EU Council.
