The number of internally displaced persons in Ukraine is rapidly increasing, but the population is also returning to the occupied regions.

The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ukraine continues to grow, said Maksym Tkachenko, member of the parliamentary Committee on Human Rights. According to him, there are currently approximately five million IDPs in the country. At the same time, a rapid increase in the number of IDPs has resulted from the enemy’s advance and the announcement of forced evacuation in the Donetsk region and the Kharkiv direction. Tkachenko added that, according to his estimates, since the beginning of the new evacuation wave in May of this year, more than 200,000 people have left their homes.

However, he noted that about 150,000 IDPs have already returned to the temporarily occupied territories because they did not receive assistance from the state and were unable to start a new life in Ukrainian-controlled territory.

However, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office, Iryna Vereshchuk, stressed that there are currently no confirmed statistics showing thousands of IDPs returning to the occupied territories.
