The EU and the US will provide $112M to the Ukrainian to the private energy holding to restore infrastructure.

The EC is providing €62.8M to the DTEK energy company for equipment and materials needed to restore generation capacity after Russian attacks, and the US government is providing $46.1M to purchase control systems and dozens of new transformers, critical to ensuring energy supply to millions of people. The US has already sent DTEK essential equipment for power grid repair crews through USAID.

Russian missile strikes on Ukraine last week damaged three of DTEK’s five thermal power plants located in Ukrainian-controlled territory. They were put out of action on the night of November 17, when Russia carried out a strike on energy facilities with a combined 210 missiles and UAVs. Russian attacks destroyed 90% of DTEK’s generation capacity by mid-summer.

However, thousands of energy workers have restored over half of the lost capacity. However, the EBRD refused to help DTEK despite the difficult situation in the country’s energy sector. This decision concerns its reluctance to support Ukrainian companies owned by local oligarchs.
