To become a NATO member, Ukraine needs to carry out reforms; all Alliance members want Kyiv to win the war.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said that Ukraine must implement the necessary reforms and fulfill certain security conditions in order to obtain NATO membership. “So, the question is, how do we build a bridge from where we are now to possible membership of Ukraine in NATO? And the answer to that question was the results of the summit in Washington,” Sullivan said, adding that President Biden is trying to establish Ukraine’s long-term support.

In his turn, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, after the defensive bloc’s two-day summit in Brussels, emphasized that Ukraine will become a NATO member in the future, and there is “complete unity” among the Alliance’s member states regarding their desire for Kyiv to win the war.

However, Ukraine’s membership in or invitation to join NATO was not the main topic of discussion during last week’s summit. According to Rutte, the focus was on large-scale military aid to Ukraine and to ensure that Russia does not think that support for Kyiv is fading.
