Ukraine’s electricity deficit may reach 30% of consumption needs.

Volodymyr Velychko, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Centrenergo, noted: “Foreign partners believe that this winter will be the most difficult for our country in its entire history, even without considering potential new massive strikes on the energy infrastructure. According to experts’ calculations, the electricity shortage in Ukraine in winter may reach 6 GW, or almost 30% of consumption, including the maximum possible import of 1.7 GW from European countries.”

He added that energy companies are working to increase the import capacity to 2.4 GW. According to the IEA’s estimates, approximately $30B is needed to repair and modernize Ukraine’s electricity generation.

“The Trypilska and Zmiivska TPPs alone will need ₴2B in funding for partial restoration in 2024. Work on assessing destruction and damage at many power generation facilities has not yet been completed. So, the amounts of damages are approximate. The issue of decentralized heat supply in large cities is particularly acute,” Velychko emphasized.
