Spain and Bulgaria call on the EU to limit the import of several agricultural products from Ukraine.

Minister of Agriculture of Bulgaria Giorgi Takhov said that the EC should ban the import of Ukrainian eggs to Bulgaria. In the first half of 2024, exports reached 2,618 tons, 400% higher than last year. The announced import prices are much lower than the prices of Bulgarian eggs, which puts severe pressure on the domestic market. The protective measures taken so far by the EU have not achieved the expected results.

Also, Unión de Uniones, the organization which represents the interests of Spanish farmers, demands that the EC find a solution to counteract the increase in grain imports, especially from Ukraine. The import of Ukrainian grains amounted to almost 8.4 million tons in 2023 and nearly 6.5 million tons in the first half of 2024.

“Spain receives more than half of the Ukrainian grain that goes to the EU, and what’s more, at increasingly lower prices,” the organization points out.

The enormous export of Ukraine grains has driven Spanish grain prices to decline by 45% since May 2022.
