The new composition of the European Commission demonstrates its firm support of Ukraine.
The position of Defense Commissioner has been created in the EU and former Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius, an ardent supporter of Ukraine, is the first to hold it.
“For those who claim that Ukraine should agree to Putin’s peace terms, I would suggest that they consider offering Putin the territory of their own country,” he said in July, adding, “Peace can only be achieved when Ukraine is winning, and its territorial sovereignty is defended.”
Kubilius will be responsible for organizing the EU’s fragmented defense industry and helping member states rearm. He will work on developing the European Defense Agency and increasing investment in defense capabilities.
In a recent speech at the European Parliament, Kubilius advocated increasing aid to Ukraine and removing restrictions on the use of Western weapons.
It should be noted that the EC’s new composition reflects Brussels’ continued firm support of Ukraine, which is bad news for Putin. The new appointments indicate a strengthening of the EU’s anti-Russian position.
