Ukraine is negotiating with South Korea to purchase 20 Hyundai trains worth $400M for UZ.

Ukrainian Railways (UZ) plans to expand its fleet of intercity high-speed trains with 20 more Hyundai Rotem models that will enable the transportation of up to six million passengers per year, said Oleksandr Pertsovsky, head of the UZ passenger department.

He specified that the Ukrainian government is currently conducting active negotiations with South Korean representatives to purchase additional trains from Hyundai. One train cost $16M, and the total cost of the plan is approximately $400M. The Korean manufacturer could provide the first trains 18-24 months after signing the agreement, and all 20 express trains could be delivered to Ukraine within 3-4 years (by 2028).

Ukraine purchased the first 10 electric trains from Hyundai Corporation in 2012 for the Euro 2012 football championship.

Pertsovsky added that UZ loses 5-7% of its fleet yearly as the wagons become outdated. By 2028, due to fleet shortages, UZ will be able to meet only a third of demand.
