The NATO allies ask Stoltenberg to detail the €100B Ukrainian aid initiative.

NATO countries are demanding Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg provide more details about his proposed €100B aid fund for Ukraine. The Secretary General’s idea is part of a plan if Donald Trump wins the US presidential election.

Politico says that even some of Ukraine’s closest Eastern European allies have recently become more reserved toward the plan. They are interested in knowing where and how such a large amount of funds will be raised. Stoltenberg is expected to provide more clarity during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers on May 30-31.

It will be essential to determine whether Germany and France, two of the key European NATO members, will support Stoltenberg’s plan. Paris believes defense spending should occur within the EU rather than through NATO. But German Chancellor Olaf Scholz does not want to increase his expenses, citing the high level of support Germany has already provided. An official from an ally of Ukraine believes the amount will have to be revised downwards.
