Energy decentralization starts in Kyiv: six mini-TPPs with a capacity of 619 MW are planned to be launched.

City authorities in Kyiv are considering the creation of six mini-TPPs with capacities between 20 MW to 324 MW (total capacity – 619 MW) in addition to the three currently available. This concept seeks to create capacities based on the modern gas turbines and gas piston units utilized by mini-TPPs, which will be distributed across Kyiv and situated closer to their end consumer.

Such turbines are more efficient than older boilers, can operate at partial power, adapt to energy demand, and transition from start-up to full power in two to five minutes. In addition, guaranteed electrical supply requires the installation of small cogeneration plants with capacities between 2.5 to 15 MW at the city’s main boiler houses.

The cost of implementing the concept is up to €1.2B, and the implementation period is 12-15 years. By the end of the year, the first stage envisages providing uninterrupted heat supply to about 300,000 Kyiv residents.
