The US Senate voted to provide $95B to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, but the House of Representatives opposes the bill.
More than $60B of this amount is intended for Ukraine. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said after the vote was announced that the Senate is telling Putin that he will regret the day he questioned America’s resolve.
The House of Representatives must also vote on the bill passage, but when that vote will take place is currently unknown. In addition, House Speaker Mike Johnson has already criticized the bill. He said the failure to address US border security makes it unacceptable.
“With the Senate getting no change on border policy, the House will have to continue to act on its own accord on these important issues. America deserves better than the Senate’s status quo,” Johnson said.
Note that if Johnson blocks the bill from a vote, the Democrats will use discharge petitions. This will allow the law to bypass the speaker, but 218 signatures must be collected in order to do so.
