This year’s latest arms package, worth $250M, and the confiscation of $300B in frozen Russian assets: this is how the US is supporting Ukraine on New Year’s Eve.

The package includes ammunition for NASAMS and HIMARS systems, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, 155 mm and 105 mm artillery shells, TOW anti-tank missiles, and Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems. The package also includes more than 15 million cartridges for small arms, explosive ammunition, spare parts, medical equipment, and maintenance items.

This year, the US provided Ukraine with 34 military aid packages together worth more than $24B.

As well, the US has proposed to the G7’s working groups that ways of confiscating $300B in frozen Russian assets be studied. Ukraine’s allies are in a hurry to reach agreement on a plan before the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine (February 24).

As the FT notes, despite the lack of concrete solutions and heated debate in Europe, the acceleration of work on this issue emphasizes Ukraine’s increasing importance for the West. Three working groups proposed by Washington will study legal matters related to confiscation, methods of applying such policies, mitigating risk, and options for how best to provide direct support to Ukraine.
