Ukraine will receive €24M for demining from Croatia, Norway, and Spain.
Following the International Donor Conference on Humanitarian Demining in Ukraine that took place in Zagreb, Croatia will allocate €5M, Spain €1.5M, and Norway NOK 200M (€17.3M) to these efforts. Moreover, Ukraine and Croatia signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in demining.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, 44 hectares of agricultural land need demining as a priority, and 13,500 square kilometers of the Black Sea, Sea of Azov, and Ukrainian rivers are contaminated with mines.
European Commissioner for the Environment Virginius Sinkavičius said that, in general, the member states and the EU have already invested €110M in the demining of Ukraine.
In addition, Ukraine is launching an initiative, Minefields Honey, to collect money and draw the attention of the world community to this problem. The idea is to use drones to sow mined fields with herbs used to produce honey. Ukrainian diplomats will take this honey with them to meetings and on international visits and give it to diplomats and public figures worldwide.
