Ukraine has a high chance of receiving long-range ATACMS soon.
The United States is close to making a decision whether or not to provide Ukraine with ATACMS, a long-range tactical missile system, reported the WSJ. However, according to European and US officials, providing ATACMS to Ukraine still needs to be approved at the highest level. At the same time, there are signs that the previously reluctant White House changed its position and came to understand “the urgent need to support Ukraine in the struggle in the coming weeks”.
As a senior Ukrainian official from the defense sector told The Wall Street Journal, in recent weeks “Kyiv has received positive signs that the US has changed its position on the ATACMS system.”
The ATACMS are surface-to-surface missiles with a range of about 300 kilometers, roughly four times the range of the missiles used by the mobile HIMARS Ukraine is already using.
