The European Commission has proposed a new package of sanctions that will be difficult to implement.

On May 5, the European Commission sent proposals to EU member states regarding the 11th package of sanctions against Russia, European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer said. The new package will focus on implementing sanctions, their effectiveness, and how to avoid circumventing them.

“The package will include issues of exports to Russia and ensuring that Russia does not receive imports from other countries“, the EC representative specified.

However, according to the FT, implementing this package of sanctions may prove to be a difficult task. One of the radical ideas is to limit sales of certain goods to third countries, which then end up in Russia. However, there are fears that this could alienate these third countries and push them towards China or Russia.

The proposed sanctions also target specific Chinese companies. Discussions between member states will continue on May 10, so the project may still change.
