Ukraine’s scrap metal exports to the EU reached a historical high.
In March 2023, Ukrainian exporters of scrap ferrous metals exported about 16,400 tons of raw materials to EU countries, 8% more than a month earlier. Market participants observe that Ukrainian exporters have once again surpassed the previous historical maximum, recorded in February of this year.
The leading export destination in March was Poland, and small volumes were delivered to Slovakia and Lithuania. At the same time, the average daily shipment also increased, which indicates a further increase in the rate of scrap export.
According to the State Bureau of Investigation, illegal schemes for issuing EUR.1 certificates of origin at the Volyn customs office had a minor impact on scrap metal exports. However, customs officers in Rivne and Lviv continue to issue certificates allowing scrap export with a duty payment of €3 per ton instead of €180.
