The EBRD is developing options for energy assistance to help Ukraine survive next winter.

Україна отримає від ЄІБ €31 млн на інфраструктуру та транспорт, а також €76 млн від Німеччини на захист електроенергетичних об'єктів та на нові ЛЕП до ЄС.

The EBRD’s main goal is to increase the energy system’s flexibility and restore heating where Russian strikes destroyed generating capacity, said a senior banker in the EBRD’s energy department in Ukraine, Olga Eryomina.

As she noted, renewable energy sources are the main vector for the future development of the Ukrainian energy industry because nuclear energy is ineffective in the context of Ukraine’s current needs. This is because nuclear energy is not flexible and there are multiple difficulties in implementing new projects. Therefore, gas turbine generation should be considered to solve the current situation. Recycling of biological waste also has good prospects, but “this is not a solution for next winter”.

“In addition, there is a significant shortage of qualified people. Now, we need to think about immediate tasks,” the specialist believes.

Therefore, among the main priorities this year will also be energy saving and energy efficiency improvement, which could reduce the pressure on Ukraine’s energy system.
