Ukrainian mining and metallurgical group Metinvest and the Italian Ministry of Enterprises signed a declaration of cooperation aimed at the revival of industry in the city of Piombino. The construction of a €2.5B modern plant that will produce green steel is planned. Work is scheduled to begin in 2025, and production will start in 2027.

Financial support for the project will be provided by the Italian credit and export agency (SACE) and leading banks, including Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. The project will help to strengthen both the Italian metallurgical industry and the Ukrainian mining industry. The enterprise’s capacity will be 2.7 million tons per year. It will use technologies based on electric arc furnaces and secondary raw materials, including scrap, pig iron, and direct recovery iron, which will be supplied by Ukraine.

The program agreement, which will define specific actions, will be signed before the beginning of 2025.
