What is holding back the development of distributed generation in the regions, and what should the Ukrainian energy system evolve into during the process of European integration?

According to Anzhelika Slobodyan, an expert from the Association of Small Communities of Ukraine, communities are keen on developing distributed generation to address their critical infrastructure needs. Out of 87 communities studied, 42 already have experience in building their own generation systems. The primary obstacles to developing generation are the lack of funding and specialists.

In communities that implemented distributed generation projects, funding primarily came from grants. The preferred technologies include solar generation, a combination of solar power plants and energy storage systems, cogeneration, and small-capacity wind turbines.

The Dixi Group think tank believes that, during the process of European integration, Ukraine should gradually phase out coal, and subsequently, gas. Renewable sources should become the foundation of electricity production, and it is advisable to retain nuclear generation as well. Ukraine needs a modern decentralized generation system to enhance resilience and reduce vulnerability to attacks.
