Currently, hydrogen production in Ukraine is approximately 360,000 tons per year, used mainly to produce ammonia. Although this is only 0.5% of global demand, with technological development and investment, Ukraine can significantly increase its production capacity.
The EU hydrogen directives envisage the construction of up to 10 GW of electrolysis capacity in Ukraine by 2030, with the intent to produce renewable hydrogen. About 1.8 GW of this capacity will provide for the domestic market, mainly for producing green ammonia for the agricultural sector.
Ukraine plans to supply the remaining hydrogen to the EU by pipeline – through the Ukrainian gas transport system. The EC supported the project in order to create the Central European Hydrogen Corridor between Ukraine and Germany.
Moreover, the EU metallurgical industry needs five million tons of hydrogen annually to decarbonize its operations. Primary metallurgical projects will be ready for the use of hydrogen by 2026-2027.
