Representatives from the Rivne Regional State Administration and British company Tellus Conservation discussed the possibility of implementing an investment proposal to establish a biochar production facility. The initiative involves using biomass waste from forestry and woodworking businesses to create biochar – a product that improves soil quality in organic farming.
It’s noted that the Rivne region has a unique resource combination: forests in the north that provide raw materials, and agricultural lands in the south where biochar can be effectively utilized. This significantly enhances the project’s economic efficiency. The plan includes not only biochar production but also utilizing the thermal energy generated as a by-product. The facility will initially serve as a pilot project with potential for expansion if successful. Tellus Conservation is prepared to process 2,000 tons of biomass annually.
Additionally, the Cabinet of Ministers has established a Coordination Council for Developing the Bioenergy Potential of Ukraine’s agricultural sector to unify efforts between business and government. Key priorities for the council include increasing the share of biofuels in energy production, developing the raw material base, and lowering production costs.
