Opened in 2012 at the cost of $1 billion, the plant produces less than 250 kilograms of CO2 per ton of steel, one tenth of the amount produced by the open hearth plant it replaced. The plant was largely financed by SACE, the Italian export credit agency, and was equipped by Italy’s Danieli Group.
