The discussion comes amid pressure from US President-Elect Donald Trump for Europe to play a more active role in working toward a future agreement to end the war. The December 18-19 summit will bring together German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish President Andrzej Duda, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Simultaneously, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will convene the leaders of Ukraine, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland for a separate discussion on the situation in Ukraine on December 18. Rutte cautioned against publicly discussing the details of possible peace agreements between Ukraine and Russia.
