Reports on the latest mineral agreement draft indicate that the Trump administration views the agreement as a means to profit from American investment in Ukraine, which possesses vast untapped mineral resources. Ukrainian officials perceive the deal as an opportunity to prevent further deterioration of relations with the Trump administration and to establish a long-term partnership with the United States.
On February 24, at a meeting with the French president at the White House, Trump mentioned that President Zelenskyy could visit the White House “this week or next week” to sign the minerals deal.
Prior to this, following a virtual meeting of G7 leaders commemorating the three-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he expressed hope for a swift signing of the agreement on Truth Social. According to Trump, this “economic partnership” will assist “the American people in repaying the tens of billions of dollars and military equipment sent to Ukraine while supporting the growth of Ukraine’s economy as this brutal and barbaric war comes to an end.”
