The US, Britain and Canada unveiled sanctions against the government of Alexander Lukashenko yesterday — the one-year anniversary of presidential elections he is widely believed to have stolen

. The US penalties target Belaruskali OAO, the state-owned potash producer, and 15 companies with ties to Lukashenko. The UK penalties go further, prohibiting purchases of transferable securities and money-market instruments issued by the Belarusian state. Lukashenko responded yesterday by accusing the British government of being lapdogs to the US and accusing Ukraine’s government of “supplying weapons and explosives” to Belarus protesters.
