Ursula von der Leyen has retained her position as head of the EC, and she promises to create a European Defense Union and support Ukraine on its way to joining the EU.

The European Parliament re-elected Ursula von der Leyen as the head of the European Commission for another five years.

While campaigning, she promised to do much more in the field of defense if she remained in office. The official vowed to build a European Defense Union, create a new position of Commissioner for Defense Affairs, and strengthen the EU’s air defense.

Regarding Ukraine, she noted: “The best investment in European security is an investment in the security of Ukraine. European financial, political, and military support should last as long as needed.”

The EC president promised to use all the tools at the EU’s disposal, including the European Peace Fund, to work on critical issues, from Ukraine’s urgent needs to future reconstruction efforts through the Ukraine Facility program.

She also said that the integration of Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans into the EU will be a priority during her second term.
