European partners believe they can convince US President Donald Trump to approve the sale of American weapons to Ukraine if they or Kyiv provide funding, especially through loans, reports WP. It is also noted that the green light for such weapons sales would depend on Trump’s whims. While Trump officials are worried that decisive support for Kyiv could upset Russia and undermine the President’s plans to open dialogue with the Kremlin, Trump still has ambitions to facilitate peace talks and seeks closer ties with Moscow.
Washington’s stance worries Ukraine’s Western allies. NATO officials estimate that, under these conditions, Ukraine could resist Russian aggression for another year. “But Ukraine will be in a very difficult position. They will be fighting in a defensive position almost all the time,” said a senior NATO official.
The official added that Ukrainian forces might lack air defenses, tank brigades, and missile reserves.
