President Zelenskyy signed a draft law restoring the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, which was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The law enhances the institutional independence of both the NABU and SAPO and provides reliable protection from influence and interference by the Russian Federation in their activities. It also includes provisions to solidify the status of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office as an autonomous body responsible for procedural management of investigations into crimes under the NABU’s jurisdiction.
Additionally, the law offers mechanisms to prevent espionage and subversive activities by foreign intelligence services targeting anti-corruption officials. European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised these legislative efforts to strengthen the anti-corruption framework, emphasizing that reforms in Ukraine related to the rule of law and anti-corruption efforts should continue, as they are vital for European integration.
