The US, the UK, and the EU have begun to pressure the United Arab Emirates, demanding that it stop providing Russia with critical electronic goods that it can use to create weapons. As the FT notes, the US government believes that the UAE has become Russia’s primary source of electronics supplies. The US is especially worried about the reexportation of goods through the UAE, which circumvents the sanctions imposed against Russia. According to the “Free Russia” fund, the export of electronic components from the UAE to Russia increased seven times last year and reached almost $283M. Last year, Abu Dhabi exported 15 times more microchips to Russia than the year before, and the volume of trade in these products increased from $1.6M to $24.3M.
