The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, ENTSO-E, has raised the maximum electricity export capacity from Ukraine and Moldova to EU countries by 250 MW, bringing it to 900 MW. This will help balance Ukraine’s power system and allow Ukrainian power plants, if there is excess capacity, to earn additional income, which will be used to counteract the effects of Russian shelling and prepare for winter.
The decision also permits greater electricity exports during the summer, when solar power generation is most efficient, without having to limit exports to maintain system balance. The new limit will be in effect until August 1, and the maximum export capacity will be reviewed every month thereafter.
Additionally, in June of this year Ukraine increased its electricity exports by 150% compared to the previous month, reaching over 237,000 MWh. In June last year, there were no exports. As a result, in June 2025 Ukraine became a net exporter for the first time since October 2023, with electricity export levels returning to those seen in autumn 2022, before the onset of Russia’s full-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
