In the last days of September, for the first time since May of this year, Ukraine exported about 0.8 GWh of electricity during a period of small domestic demand, according to the Center for Economic Strategy.
“This is very little: the Southern Ukrainian NPP can produce this amount in 15 minutes if it operates at full capacity. The export of electricity abroad is positive news, which indicates the normalization of the situation in the energy system,” explains Maksym Samoiluk, an economist at the Central Power Plant.
According to him, if necessary, exports can be quickly stopped if an electricity shortage threatens Ukraine. Electricity imports dominate overall: In September, Ukraine imported 436.7 GWh compared to 0.8 GWh of exports. The country has to import significant amounts of electricity to partially compensate for the generation capacities destroyed by the Russian Federation.
