Ukraine may buy significant volumes of American gas this year through terminals in Germany, Greece, Lithuania, and Poland, Reuters reports. These purchases are necessary in order to cover Ukraine’s needs following Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.

The GTS Operator of Ukraine reported that the country plans to import at least four billion cubic meters of gas between April and October. According to Reuters estimates, the cost of these imports will be at least $1B. Ukraine has large underground storage facilities that can be used to store American liquefied gas and President Zelenskyy said that Kyiv and the White House discussed this possibility.

Of the total import volume through Europe, up to half will be not pipeline gas, but LNG, which will be supplied to European terminals; it is planned to purchase as much gas as possible from the US. To ensure a stable heating season, Ukraine must accumulate at least 13 billion cubic meters of gas by mid-October.
