Ukraine’s woodworking industry products have already begun to occupy the niche vacated by eliminating Russian and Belarusian products from the European market. According to the CMD-Ukraine, before the introduction of sanctions Russia was the largest supplier of wood and wood products to the EU, and Ukraine was in third place after Russia and China. In 2021, Russia exported $3.8B worth of woodworking and furniture products to the EU. As well, wood and wood products accounted for the largest share of Belarusian exports to the EU. In 2021, Belarus exported $1.7B of these products to the EU. Of this volume, Ukraine has the potential to replace $1.9B in products from the Russian Federation and $860M from Belarus.
