According to Deputy Minister of Ecology Victoria Kireeva, only a small percentage of waste is sorted and sent for processing. Therefore, to solve this problem, the government adopted a framework law, On Waste Management. It provides for the definition of what to recycle and what to put in a landfill.
“Thanks to this law, we are opening opportunities to attract investments,” Kireeva said.
The law provides financial instruments, including an environmental tax on waste storage. Also, the official added, another tool is “the polluter pays”. There is already a registered draft law on container waste and packaging waste.
“This is probably 95% of the raw materials that need to be sorted. This new waste management system in Ukraine successfully works in Europe. We will start with several types of waste,” explained the deputy minister.
