Ukraine can occupy 20% of the European biomethane market.

As noted by the head of the specialized association, Heorhiy Heletukha, there is no need to fear that Ukraine will see an overproduction of biomethane and an oversaturation of the European market. After all, the EU market is deeply deficient.

He said that the EU has decided to become a climate-neutral continent by 2050. Accordingly, the EU should replace natural gas with renewable analogs such as biomethane, green hydrogen, and synthetic renewable methane.

Currently, the EU produces 4.2 billion cubic meters of biomethane per year, and in 2035, the goal is to produce 35 billion cubic meters per year. And for 2050, plans are being considered to produce 100-180 billion cubic meters. However, they calculated that with current production rates, they are lagging behind plans and will be able to produce about 20 billion cubic meters of biomethane per year by 2030.

“And this niche can be occupied by Ukraine – there is no competition there. We estimate that up to 20% of the biomethane market in the EU can be occupied by Ukraine,” Heletukha summarized.
