On May 9, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Lithuanian Railways (LTG) group of companies. Its goal is implementing the joint project Operational Model of Free Rail, the UZ said.
In particular, it is planned to create a compatible railway system and develop freight and passenger transportation using the 1,520 mm track standard between the countries. The companies plan to form a single and completely independent railway operation system in terms of technical standards, IT systems, regulations, and certificates.
The development of alternative transport corridors between the ports of the Baltic Sea and Ukraine bypassing Russia and Belarus is also envisaged, as well as a further reduction of dependence on Russian and Belarusian transit cargo flows.
