Turkey is undermining EU efforts to reduce its dependence on Russian gas.

Ankara does not plan to comply with new EU legislation on a complete cessation of Russian fuel purchases, which could create a loophole that would allow continued Russian gas supplies to Europe. Turkey will not support the European plan to completely phase out Russian gas imports by 2027, jeopardizing the EU’s goal of diminishing its reliance on Russian energy resources.

The EU plans to introduce additional monitoring requirements for gas supplies to track how and where Russian gas enters Europe. However, to accomplish this Brussels needs information from key transit countries like Turkey, which Ankara does not plan to provide.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that the country opposes unilateral sanctions, as they could worsen the economic situation and energy security, and only supports sanctions authorized by the UN Security Council. Ankara’s reluctance to comply with EU monitoring measures could hinder the effective implementation of the proposed regulation, especially given Turkey’s growing role as a transit point and potential hub for Russian gas.
