The Energy Institute (EI) has released its annual World Energy Statistical Review, which for the first time presents comprehensive global energy data for 2023. The analysis showed that:
- Total primary energy consumption reached an all-time high, increasing by 2% compared to 2022. Fossil fuel consumption also rose a record 1.5%, with coal consumption up 1.6% and oil up 2%, while gas consumption was unchanged. These resources accounted for 81.5% of total consumption (82% in 2022).
- Renewable energy production (excluding hydropower) increased by 13% to a global record of 4.75 TWh. This growth is almost entirely driven by wind and solar, accounting for 74% of all additional electricity generated. RES accounts for 8% (or 15%, including hydrogen generation) of energy consumption.
- Due to the war in Ukraine, gas demand in Europe fell by 7% after a previous drop of 13% in 2022. The share of Russian gas in EU imports fell to 15% from 45% in 2021, and LNG imports to Europe overtook pipeline gas for the second year.
