Against Russia’s slow advance on the battlefield and the exhaustion of their capabilities to help Ukraine, the Western allies believe that the Ukrainian authorities need to develop a “more realistic plan” for at least the next year of the war. The West supports Ukraine’s long-term goal of restoring territorial integrity but now advises the state to be pragmatic in its goals and strategies. These “realistic” goals could help Western officials defend the need to continue supporting Ukraine to their citizens.
According to the WSJ, a visit by the US Secretary of State and the British Foreign Secretary to Kyiv will be centered around how best to define the concept of Ukrainian victory and what Ukraine needs to accomplish this. Anthony Blinken and David Lammy’s trip is not the only one to be held recently, as other officials have also come to Ukraine for talks regarding this topic during the previous weeks.
Ukrainian authorities were informed that a complete victory for Ukraine would require hundreds of billions in support from its allies. Neither the US nor European countries are ready to provide these funds.
