The war in Ukraine triggered an 18% jump in bread prices in the EU.

The price of bread in the European Union in August increased by 18% compared to the same figure last year. This dynamic is dictated by the Russian Federation’s attack on Ukraine, which is the leading exporter of grain and fertilizers, reported VOA. The 18% increase is the highest since December 2017, when Eurostat began collecting statistics. In August 2021, prices increased by 3% compared to August 2020. Hungary and Lithuania saw the most significant annual changes in average bread prices in August, with increases of 66% and 33%, respectively. The countries with the lowest average growth were France, at 8%, and the Netherlands and Luxembourg, which recorded growth of 10% each. Bread prices have been rising steadily in the EU by an average of 8.3% since February when the war started.
