US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced at the beginning of a virtual meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine that another $1B military aid package will be allocated to Ukraine. It will include additional ammunition for HIMARS, 155 mm shells, anti-aircraft defenses, and armored vehicles.
In addition, the US has allocated $6B for Ukrainian military aid through a mechanism for ordering weapons from American manufacturers.
“This is the largest package of military aid that we have announced to date,” the head of the Pentagon noted.
The package will include interceptors for the Patriot and NASAMS systems, anti-drone systems, a “significant amount” of artillery ammunition, and anti-aircraft missiles.
Earlier, Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said that the process of supplying Ukraine with the weapons in the package announced on April 24 is already underway.
