US senators have developed a bill to support Ukraine, proposing the use of $54.6B over the next two years. About a third of the aid is planned to be financed by confiscated Russian assets and the sale of weapons to European countries. The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee states that the bill’s authors are Senators Jean Shaheen from the Democratic Party and Lisa Merkavsky from the Republican Party. The bill provides that Ukraine would receive $30B in security assistance over the next two fiscal years. It also suggests expanding the limit of weapons that US President Donald Trump can transfer to Ukraine directly from US army warehouses without Congressional approval to $6B. The package additionally includes funds to replenish US weapon stocks and to purchase new ones to replace those transferred to Ukraine. Furthermore, they aim to require Trump to either promptly start the process of confiscating frozen Russian assets or submit a plan on how to creatively leverage them. Meanwhile, the US Senate Appropriations Committee has approved the Pentagon’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Of the total, about $1B is allocated for support to Ukraine.
