The procedural voting received 67 votes. A discussion has begun in the Senate, after which there will be a final vote.
The Democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said that amendments will be made to the bill. He said the Senate will work on the document until “the work is done.”
After final approval by the Senate, the bill must be considered by the House of Representatives, which Republican Mike Johnson chairs. He previously stated that he expects the Senate to receive a separate draft law on international aid “without controversial migration measures.”
On February 9, senators supported a procedural step allowing amendments to be made to the draft law. A group of Republican senators immediately decided to introduce amendments that would have concerned the protection of the southern border of the US – even though a bipartisan package of migration policy was rejected in a vote last week.
